Kochi: The National capital became the first place where the new criminal law Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 2023 was implemented after an FIR was registered against a street vendor, media reports said.
Filing of the FIR by Kamla Market Police Station marked the implementation of the three new criminal laws across the country, the reports said.
The case under Section 285 of BNS was registered against a Bihar native for allegedly carrying out illegal commercial activities and causing obstruction to the public under the footover bridge of New Delhi Railway Station.
The accused, who was allegedly selling water and tobacco near the main road in the Kamla Market area, refused to budge to the directions of the authorities to vacate the place.
BNS replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (NSS) came in place of CrPC and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) substituted Indian Evidence Act.Cases filed before July will continue to be tried under the previous laws.
The center aims to implement a modern justice system like online registration of police complaints, issue of e-summons and mandatory video recording of all heinous crimes, the reports said.
