Kochi: India scripted history by lifting Thomas Cup for the first time beating Indonesia 3-0 in the finals at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday.
It was an incredible performance on part of Lakshya Sen to beat Anthony Ginting after going down 8-21 in the first set. But Sen bounced back into the game, miraculously beating his rival in the two subsequent sets 21-17, 21-16.
With India going up 1-0, it was the responsibility of double’s pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty to sustain the victory.
Their match was literally a repeat of the first one as they lost the first set 18-21. All credit to them for playing with more energy and concentration to beat Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the remaining two matches 23-21, 21-19 to increase India’s lead 2-0.
For Kidambi Srikant it was a straight win
against Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 in the second singles to present the country’s first ever victory in its history.
