Kochi: India and the European Union sealed a vital Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on Tuesday, media reports said.
The EU Commission President and the President of the European Council joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India-EU Summit.
The agreement is a culmination of two decades of negotiations and partnership-building between two largest democratic markets.
In 1962 India became one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the erstwhile European Economic Community, the EU’s precursor.
The deal comes at a time amidst the US President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff postures which have hit markets, supply chains remain fragile, and prolonging of Russia-Ukraine war.
The EU is India’s largest trading partner in goods, with bilateral trade touching about USD 136 billion in 2024-25, and also steadily growing services trade.
