Kochi: The South West monsoon hit Kerala on time on Saturday causing widespread calamities across the state.
Incidents of high velocity winds uprooted trees and electrical posts across the state.
Restrictions have been imposed on tourism activities like boating, kayaking, rafting, trekking among others. Night travel in hilly areas has been prevented from 7 pm to 7 am.
Even as the monsoon is on time with the local date of the middle of the Malayalam month of Edavam (Edavapaathi), India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the rains have reached eight days in advance.
The monsoon hit Kerala on May 30 in 2024, June 8 in 2023, May 29 in 2022; June 3 in 2021, June 1 in 2020, June 8 in 2019, and May 29 in 2018, IMD said.
The monsoon had hit the state 13 days before the usual date May 19 in 1990 data available since 1975 said.
The IMD has forecast above-normal cumulative rainfall in 2025 and dismissed the presence of El Nino conditions.
The monsoon would withdraw around mid September and by October 15 it would stop completely.
