Oommen Chandy passes away

Kochi: Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, 79, passed away in the wee hours of today. A seasoned Congress leader, Chandy was suffering from cancer for the last few years. He was undergoing treatment in Bengaluru. Last year he was taken to Germany for treatment.
The two time chief minister Chandy’s political life began in his teenage years. He became Kerala Students Union president in 1967 and State Youth Congress chief in 1970.
Chandy was elected from Puthuppally assembly constituency in Kottayam from 1970 twelve times without a break. He did his schooling from St George High School, Puthupally, and pre-university from CMS College, Kottayam and degree from St Berchmans College, Changanassery. He took his law degree from the Government Law College, Ernakulam.
His government faced controversies including Solar corruption case, Pattoor land case, Bar corruption case among others.
Chandy was known for his association with common people. His Jan Sampark programme is a landmark in the country.
