Opposition resolves to unite

Kochi: The Opposition parties today resolved to join hands to dethrone the BJP-government in the next general election in 2024.
The parties decided to keep off their differences to fight the election at a meeting held at Patna in Bihar, media reports said.
The decision taken at the meeting was encouraging, Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar told reporters, the reports said.
Further talks will be taken at a meeting at Shimla next month, Nitish said at a meeting chaired by him.
The Congress got prominence in the meeting.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge stressed upon the importance of opposition unity. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi exhorted other parties to forget differences.
CPI leader D Raja said that unity of opposition parties was important and not that who would lead the front, the reports said.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee claimed that the opposition is united to fight BJP’s autocratic rule. She said the opposition is a group of citizens and patriots.
The Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi party, NCP, Shiv Sena (Udhav), JDU, National Conference, Rashtriya Janata Dal, DMK, CPM, PDP were among the parties that took part in the meeting.
Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Bhagwant Mann of Punjab, M K Stalin of Tamil Nadu, Hemant Soren of Jharkhand,
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Maharashtra former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, NCP president Sharad Pawar are among those who attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, BJP chief J P Nadda said that the leaders who were jailed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi are supporting Rahul Gandhi.
Union Minister Smriti Irani welcomed Congress’ admission that it cannot defeat Modi alone’.
