Kochi: Double Olympic medalist P V Sindhu lifted the women’s title in the Swiss Open 300
Badminton Tournament at St Jakobshalle, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Sindhu defeated Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand 21-16, 21-8 in 49 minutes.
This is Sindhu’s 16th win against the 47th seed Busanan out of a total of 17 outings.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a Twitter message that “you have once again proved that you are a true Champion.”
Sindhu is the only Indian to become the Badminton World Champion and only the second individual athlete from the country to win two consecutive medals at the Olympic Games.
She was number two in the world ranking in April 2017.
Meanwhile, H S Prannoy lost to Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 21-12, 21-18 in the men’s final.
