Kochi: Travel anywhere in the city for just Rs 5 in Kochi Metro on June 17, the day when it started its maiden journey of 13.4 kms from Aluva to Palarivattom in 2017.
The aim is to promote Kochi Metro by attracting maximum travellers, mainly those who are yet to travel in the metro.
One can travel any number of times to any station. The management is yet to decide on giving an attractive offer to those having Kochi one card.
The Metro currently operates service from Aluva to Petta. The work on Petta to SN junction stretch in Tripunithura is over and it is likely to open by June 17.
The work on SN junction-Tripunithura railway station is expected to be over by next year. The work in JLN stadium – Infopark in Kakkanad has begun.
The construction work of Kochi Metro started in June 2013 and a 13.4 km line from Aluva to Palarivattom was opened to passengers on June, 17, 2017 by the Prime Minister.
A second 5 km section from Palarivattom to Maharaja’s College was opened on October 3, 2017.
Another 5.65 km section from Maharaja’s College Stadium to Thaikoodam was commissioned on September 3, 2019.
Kochi Metro has the option of operating it driverless and will implement it soon in the coming days.
Kochi Metro can boast of its decision to employ women workers managed by women’s self help group Kudumbashree. It also employs members of the transgender community.
It is the world’s first rapid transit system handled by women.
