TN to open shutters of Mullaperiyar dam if water level doesn’t dip

Kochi: Tamil Nadu will release from Mullaperiyar dam on Friday even as water in the dam stood at 137.75 feet. This was conveyed to the Kerala government by the Tamil Nadu government, Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine said on Wednesday through a Facebook post, media reports said.

Kerala is making all arrangements to ensure safety of life and property of people, he said. Kerala had appealed to maintain 137 feet level. Tamil Nadu is empowered to store water up to 142 ft level.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan had earlier called for discussions between TN and Kerala and solve the issue by building a new dam. The Supreme Court had directed the supervisory committee to look into the matter.

Built in 1895, the dam is operated by the Tamil Nadu government for its irrigation and power generation needs.
