SC orders expert panel probe into Pegasus allegations

Kochi: A retired Supreme Court judge will head the expert committee to probe into the Pegasus phone tapping issue. In its order, the Supreme Court said. Justice R V Ravindran will head the committee that will probe into allegations of use of Pegasus software for alleged unauthorised surveillance, media reports said.

The Court said that Justice Raveendran will be assisted in this task by Alok Joshi, a former IPS officer and Sundeep Oberoi, Chairman, Sub Committee (International Organisation of Standardisation/International Electro-Technical Commission/Joint Technical Committee).

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said the committee will “enquire, investigate and determine” whether the Pegasus suite of spyware was used for various purposes including spying. Reports were published in the year 2019 about the hacking of WhatsApp accounts of Indian citizens. It will also make various recommendations to prevent such things in the future. Twelve petitions were filed seeking an independent probe into the allegations.
