Kochi: In an unprecedented move, outgoing Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has recommended to the President seeking ouster of Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson M R Baiju and 15 members for alleged irregularities in the PSC. Arlekar is said to have approached the President a week before he was relieved of his duties to take charge as Governor of Tamil Nadu, On Manorama reported. The Crime Branch is already probing into the alleged irregularities in the appointment of high paid jobs in the planning department.Criticising Arlekar’s move, the Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan said the move seeking removal of the PSC chairperson is unlawful, a violation of constitutional provisions, and a gross abuse of power. The President’s power to remove the chairman and members of the PSC flows from Article 317 of the Constitution. The President can refer the recommendation to the Supreme Court which will order a judicial probe. If the judicial enquiry finds merit in the allegations, the Supreme Court can recommend the removal of the PSC chairman or members.
