Kochi: BJP announced V V Rajesh as the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram even as it took a marathon deliberation to find a candidate, media reports said.
Ashanath who was elected from Karumam ward will be the deputy mayor. Elections to the mayor and deputy mayor posts will be held in all corporations across the state on Friday.
BJP had secured 50 seats out of 101 in the corporation.
BJP has won a municipal Corporation for the first time in the state’s history.
There were speculations over making former DGP R Sreelekha as Mayor, even as there was dissent over the matter due to her inexperience in politics.
RSS seems to have prevailed over BJP which backed Sreelekha.
The local body polls were held on December 9.
Interestingly, Congress and BJP are sailing in the same boat when it comes to deciding Mayors after the local body polls in Kerala.
While anonymity evaded in electing Mayor in Kochi in Congress, the BJP struggled to pick one albeit with division.
BJP’s claim of being a disciplined party seems to be waning in the backdrop of differences over electing Mayor and Municipality and panchayat Presidents.
