Kochi: Even as over 600 residents are fighting to protect their land from the Wakf Board near here, 37 families in Chavakkad in Thrissur district, facing similar threat, media reports said.
The affected families claimed that they have been living there for over 50 years.
Reports of Waqf Board staking claim over land in Munambam near here, Wayanad have sent shivers down the spines of Left led and Congress led coalitions who are accused of helping Waqf in their pursuit, Asianet news reported.
The issue has been fully utilised by the rightist BJP who are making it an election issue in Palakkad, Chelakkara assembly seats and Wayanad Lok Sabha seat where byelections are held.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Shone George have handed a memorandum to Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on the Munambam issue.
It may be recalled that the UDF and the LDF had recently passed a resolution against the BJP-led government’s Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, pending before Parliament.
