Kochi: Kannada actress Ranya Rao’s mother’s plea challenging her detention under (COFEPOSA) for alleged gold smuggling was dismissed by Karnataka High Court on Friday, media reports said.
A division bench rejected the plea of Rao’s mother H P Rohini challenging the validity of her daughter’s detention under the COFEPOSA.
Even as a special court granted bail to Rao as DRI failed to file a chargesheet within the statutory timeline of 60 days, Rao remains in jail as she was booked under the COFEPOSA.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Ranya at the Bengaluru International Airport and allegedly seized 14.2 kg of gold worth ₹12.86 crores from her under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA).
DRI officials also seized jewellery worth ₹2.06 crore and cash worth ₹2.67 crore from her house making total seizure in the case to ₹17.29 crore.
Ranya was accused of using the airport exit route reserved for VVIPs. Rao frequently traveled to Dubai and alleged misuse of VIP airport exits allegedly misusing the powers of her father K Ramachandra Rao who is the DGP.
