Kochi: Communist leader and freedom fighter N Sankaraiah, 101, passed away in Chennai today, media reports said.
He was not keeping well for the last few days and was admitted to a private hospital where he breathed his last. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Born on July 15, 1922, Sankaraiah was among the 32 CPI leaders who left the party to form the CPI(M) in 1964. He was thrice elected to Tamil Nadu assembly.
He was also Tamil Nadu State secretary of the CPM.
Sanakaraiah had actively participated in the Quit India movement. He had spent eight years in prison during the independence struggle.
Sankaraiah was editor of CPM mouthpiece Theekathir. He married Navamani who was a Christian. The funeral will be held on Thursday, November 16.
