Kochi: The Supreme Court on Friday sent notices to Congress office bearers in Kerala over a social media post on Chief Justice of India.
The notices were sent to its president and secretary seeking their response on why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them over the post.
A division bench made the observation while hearing a writ petition filed by advocate Vineet Jindal, seeking suo motu action over the post published on the official X account of the Indian National Congress’ Kerala unit on October 12, 2026 tagged to CJI.
The Apex Court underscored the supremacy of the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary, observing that no individual or political organisation could claim to be above the constitutional framework.
The Congress told the court that the controversial post was uploaded without the party’s consent.
The party submitted that the post was deleted immediately after the error came to the knowledge of the leadership.
The party also informed the court that it would file an unconditional apology.
The court observed that it would examine whether the apology was genuine.
