New Delhi: Hard hitter of the 1983 world cup winning team, Yashpal Sharma, 66, died on Tuesday following cardiac arrest. According to media reports, Yashpal died after his daily exercise. Yashpal made 1,606 runs in 37 Tests, and 883 in 42 ODIs. He has to his credit two wickets as a bowler in a test match and an ODI.His 60-run innings in the semifinal against England was crucial in India’s march in the 1983 world cup.
He made 240 runs at an average of 34.28 in the world cup which includes the breezy 60 against England in the semi-finals. He made his debut in 1979 against England. Yashpal proved his mettle as a teenager when he scored 260 for Punjab schools against Jammu & Kashmir schools in 1972. Thereafter there was no looking back. A vegetarian and teetotaller, Yashpal has served as a national selector, umpire and coach. He is survived by wife, two daughters and a son.
