Federer to leave top level tennis

Kochi: One of the greatest tennis players, Roger Federer, 41, is quitting professional tennis following fitness problems and a series of surgical interventions.

He will quit top-level tennis after the Laver cup in London this month, media reports said.
He has won 20 Grand Slam titles and number one in five seasons. He has not played since the 2021 Wimbledon due to knee problems which had been troubling him for the last three years.

“I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career,” the reports said.

Only Rafael Nadal of Spain with 22 majors and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with 21 have more men’s Grand Slam singles titles than Federer.

He said it was a bittersweet decision as he would miss everything the tour had given him. He said he considered himself one of the most fortunate persons on Earth as he was given a special talent to play tennis, the reports said.

Federer started professional tennis at the age of 16 in 1998. He won the first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003.
