Aryadan passes away

Kochi: Senior Congress leader Aryadan Mohammad, 87, passed away at a hospital in Kozhikode on Sunday.

Aryadan was in the ICU for the last few days for treatment of infection. Aryadan Mohammad was in Congress from 1952 and remained with it for the last seven decades.

He became minister four times and was elected to the assembly eight times. He was last elected in 2011.

He was part of the Left government in 1980 when the Congress ‘A’ group joined hands with the left parties to form the government.
Aryadan was known for his open criticism of UDF ally IUML which was troubled by this.

Born in 1935, Aryadan did his schooling at Nilambur. He joined Congress in 1952 and held many key positions in the party. He started political activities through trade unionism.

He will be buried at Valiyappalli Juma Masjid at Mukkatta in Nilambur on Monday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to take part in the funeral.
