‘Fast receding feature of rivers beneficial’

Kochi: Central Water Commission (CWC) has predicted chances of three rivers triggering floods in Kerala.

Manimala, Karamana and Neyyar pose extreme possibility of triggering floods, CWC Deputy Director Sini Joseph told a Malayalam online news portal.

The next two days are crucial in view of the rising level of the rivers. The CWC has 44 centres in the state morning the situation, she said.

Thodupuzha, Achankovil, Meenachil rivers could trigger inundation, she said, adding that the next two days are crucial.

Until yesterday, the threat was from rivers in the southern part. Since, the intensity of rain has shifted to the North part of the state, there is some relief.

Most of the red alerted areas are in Central and North Kerala.

However, the water level in rivers in North Kerala is safe. If rains continued, things could change.

As of now the situation in Periyar river is not much problematic.
She said the main relief in Kerala is that the rivers recede fast once rain stops unlike many places.

Most of the dams including Idukki, Idamalayar, Kakki and Banasura have about 65  per cent of their capacity.
