Kochi: The Shia majority Iran has banned imparting foreign languages, including Arabic, in lower classes in schools, media reports said.
Children in kindergartens and primary schools will not be taught foreign languages with immediate effect, the reports said.
The order said that “…at this age, the Iranian identity of the child is being formed,” the reports quoting an official said.
The country had banned teaching of English in primary schools in 2018. It is taught from secondary school onwards.
Iran’s official language is Persian which is strongly influenced by Arabic, French and English.
The country had planned last year to teach French in schools to counter English.
The government had banned Iranian and dual-national students from attending international schools leading to a drop in the number of students in some international schools.
