Kochi: Puthuppally assembly constituency in Kerala will go to bypolls on September 5, the Election Commission of India said.
The death of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on July 18 necessitated the election, media reports said.
Oommen Chandy’s son Chandy Oommen is the front runner as Congress-led UDF nominee.
The rival CPM-led LDF, which is ruling six out of eight panchayats in the constituency, is speculated to field Jaick C Thomas, while the saffron party BJP might contest Anil K Antony, son of senior Congress leader and former Defence Minister A K Antony.
The code of conduct has come into force in the constituency which is a stronghold of the Congress. Chandy had been winning from here for the last 53 years.
The final date for submitting nomination papers is August 17. The results will be declared on September 8.
Byelections have also been announced Jharkhand, Tripura, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
