Kochi: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been named interim President who has imposed an emergency in the country today.
The decision on the appointment was taken based on the communication that took place between Parliament Speaker and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who moved out of the country due to unrelenting protests against him and others.
Gotabaya, who had announced last week that he would step down today, moved out to Maldives with his wife due to turmoil in the island nation today.
Gotabaya has refused to quit as president.
Ranil’s term is until July 20 when the Parliament is scheduled to meet to elect the new president.
Ranil had tendered his resignation on July 9 to facilitate the setting up of an all-party government.
The parliamentarians urged him to continue as Prime Minister in the wake of Sri Lanka holding talks with the IMF to solve the problem.
The country is in serious financial crises due to foreign exchange crunch and fuel shortage.
