Kochi: The new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is Ltd Gen Anil Chauhan (Retired).
The post is getting filled ten months after the death of CDS Gen Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash.
Lt Gen Chauhan will function as secretary to the government of India, department of military affairs, media reports quoting the defence ministry said,
He joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981 and had served the country in different positions for over 40 years.
Lt Gen Anil Chauhan had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and northeast.
Lt Gen Chauhan was Eastern Army Command chief before retiring in May 2021. The government gets military advice from the CDS who is the senior-most bureaucrat in the defence ministry.
The CDS is a single-point military adviser to the Defence Minister.
Born on May 18, 1961, Chauhan studied in the Kendriya Vidyalaya Kolkata. He was trained in National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
