Water released from Mullaperiyar

Kochi: With water level reaching the permitted 136 feet mark at the Mullaperiyar dam, Tamil Nadu slightly raised 13 shutters of the over century old dam on Sunday.

The shutters were raised by about 10 centimetres

to discharge about 250 cusecs of water per second into the Periyar river. The water released from the dam reaches the reservoir of Idukki dam where today’s water level is 2,362 feet against its  Full Reservoir Level of 2,403 feet.

Authorities have issued a warning to people about the possibility of releasing water from the dam in the wake of heavy inflow.

Residents living along the banks of the Periyar river were cautioned to remain cautious

Inflow into the dam is 5,867 cusecs, while outflow to Tamil Nadu is around 2,117 cusecs.

Tamil Nadu takes water to recharge Vaigai river through the penstock and the Irachipalam canal to irrigate the delta region facing acute water shortage.
