Mankoottathil quits

Kochi: Congress suffered a serious blow when Youth Congress chief Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, quit as Youth Congress chief in Kerala following sexual allegations against him, media reports said.
Rahul said he was stepping down “not because of any wrongdoing, but to protect the Congress party” when the party is fighting against the anti-people policies of the LDF government.
He said he was prepared to face any complaint against him in court. He dismissed reports that the party leadership had demanded his resignation.
He said the actor who levelled allegations of misconduct was once a close friend.
The decision comes in the wake of TV channels broadcasting telephonic conversation purportedly between a woman and Rahul who suggests she abort her pregnancy.
A former media person and actor Rini Ann George had accused a young political leader of making improper advances. Another woman also made similar allegations.
Women Congress leaders had lodged a complaint against Rahul to party’s Kerala incharge and AICC general secretary Deepadas Munshi against Rahul.
Deepadas Munshi has sought a report from state Congress leadership.
The Kerala leadership is not to protect Rahul if he is guilty. Rahul was elected to Kerala assembly in a by-election.
