SC upholds Ranya’s detention

Kochi: The Supreme Court has upheld the preventive detention of Kannada actress Ranya Rao by the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB) for allegedly smuggling gold into the country, media reports said.
A division bench of the Court also upheld the detention of her aide Sahil Sarkariya Jain under the provisions of the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA).
The court dismissed the Special Leave Petitions challenging the detention orders of April 22, 2025, which was upheld by the Karnataka High Court.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted Ranya Rao on March 3, 2025, and recovered 17 gold bars of 14.2 kilograms at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.
Based on her statements, Sahil Sarkariya Jain was arrested on April 7, 2025. The authorities alleged that Jain had facilitated the disposal of foreign-marked gold consignments between November 14, 2024 and February 14, 2025, along with the actress.
Their relatives of the two accused challenged the detention orders on multiple grounds before the Supreme Court and High Court.
