Congress in soup on Pope remarks

Kochi: Congress in Kerala cut a sorry figure when it was forced to delete a sarcastic post on social media on Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Pope Francis at the G7 summit in Italy, media reports said.

The post which said “Finally, the Pope got a chance to meet God!” was removed after the BJP started using it to accuse the Congress of insulting the Pope, the reports added.

Kerala BJP president K Surendran tweeted, “… Now, it has even stooped to mocking the respected Pope and the Christian community.”

Kerala BJP general secretary George Kurian said the post was offensive and hurtful to religious sentiments, particularly in Kerala.

BJP IT Cell in-charge Amit Malviya alleged that the Congress has a history of denigrating other faiths and demanded an apology from former Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Defending the post, Kerala Congress unit Vice-President V T Balram said  it was satirical and aimed at exposing the “shallowness” in PM Modi’s public relations efforts.

The Congress clarified that it does not intend to insult any religion or religious figures, the reports said.
