Kochi: A junior Sub Inspector, Jimmy Jose, Hill Palace police station, has been suspended in connection with the death of Manoharan, 52, who was taken into police custody for alleged traffic violation.
The suspension was issued by Kochi City police commissioner as the issue turned controversial with public picketing the police station in Tripunithura in the city suburbs, media reports said.
The Commissioner has ordered enquiry into the incident by Crime Branch DySP.
Eye witnesses said that the cop beat up Manoharan before taking him to the police station on Saturday night. Police said Manoharan collapsed in the police station.l after which he was taken to the government hospital in Tripunithura and later to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader V D Satheeshan demanded action against the Circle Inspector whom he accused of terrorising the public.
Satheeshan alleged that the Circle Inspector was controlled by the CPM leaders in the district.
He warned to launch protests if the government failed to act against more cops involved in the death of Manoharan.
