Kochi: The CPI(M) national General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, 72, passed away at New Delhi on Thursday, media reports said.
Yechury has been undergoing treatment at AIIMS for an acute respiratory tract infection since August 19.He was in the ICU at AIIMS where he was being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, the reports said.
Born on August 22, 1952, into a Telugu family in Madras, Yechury grew up in Hyderabad and Delhi.His parents were government employees.
He topped the All-India first rank in the Central Board of Secondary Education Higher Secondary Examination. Yechury pursued his studies at St Stephen’s College, Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University.Yechury joined the Students’ Federation of India in 1974 and CPM in 1975. He was arrested during The Emergency while he was still a student. Yechury played a key role in creating an leftist bloc in JNU.
Yechury was against US foreign policy and blamed it for the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.Yechury married journalist Seema Chisti. He was married before to Indrani Mazumdar with whom he has a daughter and a son.His son Ashish Yechury died at 34 due to Covid.
