HC rejects Pinarayi’s plea for stay on FIR

Kochi: The High Court of Kerala on Tuesday rejected pleas of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and kin seeking urgent interim stay on the FIR in connection with CMRL bribery case among others. The division bench has posted the case for further hearing to another date. Shockingly the ruling Congress-led government also backed the Opposition Leader and his relatives’ plea seeking an urgent interim stay. The state government argued there was lack of ground to register FIRs against Pinarayi and others sought preliminary probe into the allegations. Opposing the government, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) argued that the accused have no ground to seek a stay. The court was hearing applications by Vijayan, daughter Veena T and her husband P A Mohamed Riyas seeking stay on the single judge’s October 9 order directing the Vigilance to file FIR against them. The accused claimed that they were not heard by the single judge before issuing the October 9 direction when the court ordered to book them while considering a petition of Advocate K M Shajahan. One FIR was registered against Vijayan and one against daughter and her husband CMRL bribery case after the High Court on October 9 directed to book them based on a report submitted by the ED to the state police. The ED had sought registration of a case based on evidence gathered during its investigation and searches conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
