Indian origin South African wins Nobel

Kochi: Indian origin South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, 85, on Friday won the Nobel Peace Prize “for her efforts to promote peace and international law”, media reports quoting the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
The peace prize is the fifth Nobel awarded this week, after literature, chemistry, physics and medicine.
The Nobel Peace Prize, of about $1.2 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10 coinciding with the death anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who founded the awards in his 1895 will.
Born into a Tamil family in South Africa, Pillay studied law and stood up against apartheid.
Pillay was appointed to the high court of South Africa in 1995. Four years later she became a judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
