Kochi: The Karnataka High Court has quashed criminal proceedings against two men accused of raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans inside a mosque, media reports said.
Passing the verdict a few days back, the court observed that the act by them did not “outrage the religious feelings of any class”, the reports said.
The order of the court was uploaded on the court’s site on Tuesday.
The complainant accused two men of Dakshina Kannada district of trying to create division between two communities by doing the act in a mosque in Aittur village on the night of September 24, 2023 and shouted slogans ‘Jai Shri Ram’.
Based on the complaint, they were
booked under different sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused challenged police action in the High Court arguing that a mosque is a public place and there was no case of criminal trespass and that shouting of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ did not meet the requirement of an offence defined under Section 295A of the IPC.
Karnataka government opposed the petitioners’ plea.
