Kochi: Suspended Congress leader Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, was arrested in a third rape case the wee hours of Sunday, media reports said.
Mamkootathil was taken into custody around 1 am from a hotel in Palakkad and shifted to a police camp in Pathanamthitta district, the reports said.
The case was registered based on a complaint filed by a woman of Pathanamthitta district before she married a different person.
Her statement was recorded through video conferencing from Canada where she is residing now.
She alleged that Mamkootathil raped her after promising to marry her. When she conceived, he ditched her, the complainant alleged.
She accused him of fleecing money from her on multiple occasions.
Police said Mamkootathil was taken into custody around 1 am from Palakkad and shifted to a police camp in Pathanamthitta district.
The Special Investigation Team probing two earlier sexual assault cases against Mamkootathil has been entrusted with the investigation of the third complaint as well.
The Congress had expelled Mamkootathil from its primary membership, citing multiple criminal cases and internal complaints.
Earlier, Rahul got bail in two other alleged rape cases.
