Kochi: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian’s helicopter met with an accident in a mountainous area on Sunday, media reports said.
The helicopter made a “hard landing” after it got into difficulties in heavy fog in the north of the country while returning from a visit to Azerbaijan, the reports said. Raisi was heading to the city of Tabriz, in Iran, the reports said. Rescuers were not able to reach the site due to inclement weather.
The bad weather was complicating rescue efforts, the state news agency IRNA reported. The state Iranian TV carried prayers for his safety.
Raisi, 63, became president for a second time in 2021. His government took harsh steps against anti-government protests.
