Kochi: In a major relief to the BJP-led government at the centre, the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the abrogation of Article 370 and said the article was temporary.
Pronouncing its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of the Article and bifurcation Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories, the Apex court upheld reorganisation of Ladakh as Union Territory.
The court said that steps should be taken to conduct polls in the assembly by September 30, 2024.
The five member constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud including Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant, passed the judgment.
The Apex court reserved the judgment after hearing the arguments for 16 days on September 5. The centre had abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
