TN seeks SC permission to cut trees

Kochi: Tamil Nadu has moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to cut 15 trees to take up reinforcement work in Baby dam in Mullaperiyar.

Tamil Nadu said that the officials of the two states jointly conducted an inspection of Mullaperiyar on June 21 and decided to cut 15 trees, media reports said.

It also presented the copies of  communications that took place between the two states in this regard, the reports said.

Tamil Nadu also presented the news reports of Kerala cancelling the November 6 order permitting it to cut the trees.

It claimed that Kerala’s decision to cancel permission to cut trees is a contempt of court.

Tamil Nadu prayed to the court to direct Kerala to carry out repair works of the Vallakadavu-Mullaperiyar road as it is difficult to transport building materials to reinforce Mullaperiyar dam, the reports said.

Kerala is causing hindrance to carry out reinforcement work of the dam and is not cooperating to implement the Supreme Court constitutional bench verdict.
Kerala has been creating hurdles in strengthening the Baby dam for the last 16 years.

Tamil Nadu prayed to the court to direct Kerala to set up rain gauges in the catchment areas of Mullaperiyar dam as it was decided in the meeting of the Apex court appointed committee in 2015.
