Kochi: UAE President and Abu Dhabi ruler,
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away on Friday, media reports said.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected to the helm on November 3, 2004 after his father’s death a day before.
The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the UAE’s first president since the formation of the union in 1971.
Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Khalifa adopted a strategic plan to carry out a major reform of the government of Abu Dhabi.
He guided the UAE to a high development mode, improving the standard of living of its citizens.
He injected more power into the strategies of his father in making the country economically strong.
He ensured development of the oil and gas sector and related industries.
Projects connected to housing, education and social services received tremendous impetus during his time.
He introduced the landmark nomination system for members of the Federal National Council.
