141 MPs suspended

Kochi: A total of 141 opposition members in Parliament were suspended for disrupting proceedings in Upper and Lower houses which is the highest ever in the history, media reports said.

Protesting over the security breach that happened in Lok Sabha a few days back, the members of two houses demanded resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Dainik Jagran newspaper that the security breach was a serious matter and it should be probed, but was against a debate.

The Opposition MPs demanded a statement by the Home Minister. Most have been suspended for the remainder of the session, while the fate of some will depend on the report of the privileges committee.

The first parliamentarian suspended was Godey Murahari, an independent Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh on September 3, 1962, for the remainder of the session over unruly behaviour. In the Lok Sabha, 63 members were suspended in 1989 following a ruckus over the tabling of the Justice Thakkar Committee report on the assassination of Indira Gandhi. In 2015, 25 MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha for unruly behaviour.
