Kochi: Atleast 125 people including women and children were killed in massive landslides in different areas in hilly Wayanad in North Kerala in the wee hours of Tuesday, media reports said.
At Least 98 people were reported missing.
Many were trapped at different places while the army units from different places were trying to rescue them.
Landslides hit Meppadi, Mundakkai Town and Chooramala in the district. Hundreds were hospitalised.
The first landslide was reported in Mundakkai Town past midnight last night amidst heavy downpour.
The second landslide struck near Chooralmala School at around 4 am washing away a bridge linking Chooral Mala Town with Attamala in Mundakkai, hampering rescue operations.
Four hundred families were reported to be stranded in the region following the collapse of the bridge, the reports said.
Heavy rains continue to bash in many places in the state. Educational institutions in 11 districts in North Kerala have been given holiday on Wednesday.
Red alert has been sounded in 11 districts.
Many trains have been rescheduled due to swelling of rivers and landslides.
The Kerala government has announced two days of mourning.
There will be no official celebrations and the national flag will fly half mast, the reports said.
