Kochi: Negotiations between US and Iran started in Switzerland amidst reports of Tehran taking umbrage to President Trump’s threat.
Iran raised the issue of Israel’s attack on Tehran backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Trump signed a memorandum of understanding last week signalling the beginning of the process of deescalation.
Despite Iran claiming to have closed the Strait of Hormuz again, millions of barrels of oil continued to flow through the waterway over the weekend.
Reports said Trump directly warned Iranian leaders directly against closing Hormuz, CNBC reported.
Hostilities broke out between Iran and US-Israel from February 28 resulting in the killing of Iranian officials including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran retaliated by conducting strikes on the US, Israel and on US bases across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait who are allies of the US.
Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz disrupting the global economy by causing a fuel crisis.
The US too imposed an embargo on Hormuz countering Iran’s move even as Israel continued to target Hamas and Hezbollah in South Lebanon.
