Kochi: High Court of Kerala on Monday permitted BJP Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor R Sugathan to take oath of office inside the Viyyur Central Prison where he is held under preventive detention.
The oath will be administered by V V Rajesh, Mayor, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation at 11 a.m on Tuesday.
The court allowed accredited mediapersons to cover the ceremony from the jail. Sugathan has been granted one-day interim bail for swearing-in, the Hindu reported.
The court observed that it was the duty of the court to strengthen democracy.
The High Court had directed all 20 BJP councillors to retake their oaths for breach of procedure. Nineteen of them have taken oath barring Sugathan who was arrested and incarcerated under various charges which according to the BJP were fictitious in a bid to dethrone BJP from power in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
