Kochi: A bus driver was sentenced to 190 years and the bus owner to 10 years in jail by a Madhya Pradesh court for causing the death of 22 passengers in a road accident in 2015.
The court sentenced the 47-year-old Shamshuddin for 10 years jail on each of the 19 charges made against him for causing the accident on May 4 when the bus fell into a dry canal at Panna in Madhya Pradesh, media reports said.
There were 65 passengers onboard the bus. The emergency exit of the bus was closed using steel rods to create room for accommodating more passengers, the reports said.
The survivors said that the driver was going very fast and did not heed their pleas to reduce the speed.
Various charges under various sections of the IPC 304/ 304/A, 279, 337 among others including the motor vehicles act were slapped on the driver and the owner.
