Kochi: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday
rejected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea to seeking interim stay on a lower court verdict on a criminal defamation case against him.
The court said it had to study the case thoroughly and would take up the case only after the summer vacation.
The Surat Sessions court had last month refused to stay his conviction passed by another court in the 2019 defamation case.
The lower court had sentenced him to two years in jail following which he was disqualified from Parliament.
The Surat court had on March 23 sentenced Rahul Gandhi under different sections of IPC on the basis of a case filed by a BJP MLA Purnnesh Modi.
He had filed a criminal defamation case against Gandhi over his alleged remarks against “Modi surname” during an election campaign in Karnataka in 2019.
Gandhi had prayed before the Surat Sessions Court to allow him a bail and sought a stay on the lower court order convicting him.
The sessions court granted him bail but refused to stay the conviction.
