Army in power in Dhaka

Kochi: In a dramatic development, the army took over power after unabating students forced Bangladesh President Sheikh Hasina to flee to India after quitting the Prime Ministership on Monday, media reports said.

Several days-long students’ protests leading to hundreds of deaths made it terrible for Sheikh Hasina to continue as prime minister.

Army chief Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman announced on TV forming an interim government headed by him.

Stating that the country was hit by economic crisis and violence, he said things will become normal soon.

He said he would discuss with the president about formation of an interim government for which he held parleys with main opposition parties barring Haseena’s Awami League.

The 76 year old Hasina, landed at India’s Hindon airbase station near Delhi from where she will leave for London.

Bangladesh had reserved 30 per cent of the government jobs for the families of veterans who fought the 1971 liberation war. This triggered massive protests last month.

Hundreds were killed in the protest.
