Governor’s nod to ordinance on Lokayukta

Kochi: Finally the Governor Arif Mohammad Khan gave his nod to Kerala government’s ordinance empowering it to reject the report of the Lokayukta.

The Governor had kept the ordinance in abeyance as the government was not able to give a convincing reply to his query seeking the need for the amendment of Kerala Lokayukta Act 1999, media reports said.

On his return from the US and UAE tour, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met the Governor on Sunday following which the Governor gave his green signal to the ordinance.

The amendment will clip the wings of the Lokayukta which would be only empowered to make recommendations or send reports to the government.

Former Minister K T Jaleel of the previous LDF government had to resign after the Lokayukta found that he had abused power as a minister.

The ordinance comes at a time when complaints are pending against Pinarayi Vijayan and Higher Education Minister R Bindu before the Lokayukta.
