Kochi: Teenager Divya Deshmukh beat 38-year-old Koneru Humpy in an all-Indian final to become the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup on Monday in Batumi, Georgia, media reports said.
The 19-year-old Divya of Nagpur beat Humpy using black pieces in the second rapid tie-breaker game.
The winner was spotted through a tie-breaker. Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh played out a draw in the first rapid tie-breaker, before Divya triumphed in the second.
Divya said “I need time to process it. I think it was fate that I get the GM title this way. Before this tournament, I didn’t even have one norm. It definitely means a lot. There’s a lot more to achieve. I’m hoping this is just the start.”
She was visibly emotional and in tears, as she celebrated with her mother alongside.
