Kochi: Metroman E Sreedharan said he suspected Kerala government is either ignorant or it wants to derail the proposed High Speed Railway project by planning for a Thiruvananthapuram – Kasargod long Railway line.
The Regional Rail Transit System (RRTS) is not an accepted Railway system and it cannot be planned and executed under the legal cover of “Railway Act”.
The concept of RRTS was introduced by the centre under 2017’s New Metro Rail Policy to cater to passenger services within a larger urban agglomerate or metropolitan area connecting the outskirts to the centre of the city.
The services have a greater number of halts at smaller distances. RRTS or Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) are common in large metropolitan cities as it helps in decongesting the city centre by providing safe and speedy access to the city centre.
It has to be designed and constructed under “Metro Act” under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and not under Indian Railways, he said in press release.
