Kochi: Noted biotechnologist,
Madhav Gadgil, 84, passed away in Pune on Wednesday night, media reports said.
Gadgil, who was the founder of the Centre for Ecological Sciences, also served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.
Gadgil was appointed chairman of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), in 2010 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to address ecological concerns Western Ghats.
He also recommended decommissioning of Hydroelectric projects in the vulnerable areas.
In 2011, the committee cautioned to take stern measures to protect Western Ghats from imminent natural disasters.
There were widespread protests across in Western Ghats region, mainly Kerala.
