Kochi: Legendary footballer Lionel Messi’s tour to India was interrupted when his supportèrs flung seats towards the pitch for not being able to see him for longer duration at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, BBC reported.
The fans who had paid up to Rs 12,000 to see the legendary footballer were obscured by a large group of officials and celebrities when he emerged to walk around the pitch.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed was “deeply disturbed and expressed shock” over the fans’ behavior.
She said on X that a probe will be conducted into it.
Messi, who is in India for promotional events in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi, unveiled his statue in Kolkata.
Some frustrated fans stormed the pitch and vandalised banners and tents, as others hurled plastic chairs and water bottles, the reports said.
